odd wallpaper

the wallpaper in our local has always intrigued me. it's all olde timey adds for various products. here are two that have stood out to me recently:

this first one reminds me of ghandi. shaving in front of a computer screen.

the second one is for a product called genuine bear grease, which promotes healthy hair growth.

there are also a few adds that use the word mustachio, which i love.

ranking funny movies

so, i was thinking about the funny movies i've seen in the last year or so and wanted to rank them, in case anyone was wondering.

1. pineapple express
2. superbad
3. role models
3. knocked up
4. tropic thunder
5. step brothers

let me comment on role models briefly. saw it last night with very low expectations. it was very funny, and surprised the crap out of me how funny it was.

what's going on

yeah, so i haven't blogged much lately. it's because i'm out livin. that's right, l i v i n. you should get out and try it. just kidding. i mean, i've been doing stuff, and hanging out with people (like the andersons), and i just haven't taken time to sit down and write anything.

so, here goes with some stuff.

anybody have any luck voting in the bee's people's choice awards? i haven't. i've tried from two different computers (one @ work, one @ home) and haven't been able to get the system to let me past the first page. i answer the questions, then i click on next and nothing.

(UPDATE: it let me go to page two. you should go over and vote @ http://www.fresnobee.com/peopleschoice/)

had a good time @ the swede fest. thanks again to all the directors, and thanks to brodiemash for putting that on. tvlgfhf has one in the planning stage so we'll be in the next festival.

speaking of tvlgfhf, we'll be posting a new episode tomorrow, so download it from the site or hit up itunes and subscribe.

had a good time @ the benefit for cafe corazon, the little bit i was there for. the old gut was a little off, and i wanted to rest a bit. since i missed rademacher, i think i've got to definitely check out this show on wednesday night:

i know, it would be a non-traditional night for the dice riff raff, but hey, some of you still haven't seen the greatness of rademacher.

finally, today i got a hair cut.

here's me before:

side view

and hair...i mean here...i am post clip. rocking it short again.

for those of you who haven't seen me around lately, yes, i'm currently rocking a beard. a novembeard to be precise. it seems that it's beard appreciation month so i thought i'd grow one. it was annoying for a bit, but it's grown on me. yeah, i said that, too. i'm 95% sure i'm cutting it off on dec. 1 or thereabouts.

recommendations?

so, i've been wanting to expand my fresno building paintings to beyond the tower theater. i'll keep painting the tower, but i'd like to do some other meaningful/cool/interesting fresno buildings.

so, some that i've been considering are:
st. therese church (another recognizable tower locale)
city hall (love it)
security pacific building
the county jail

thoughts? other buildings you'd like to see me take on?

benefit for cafe corazon

*updated!*

ahh, the start of another week. and, as usual i'm already looking forward to the weekend rather than paying attention and really enjoying everything that happens between now and then.

some good friends will be hitting the 'no later in the week.

and on sunday, there's an event planned to benefit the owners of cafe corazon. it's an early start, which is cool, because that allows for more fun on sunday night.
audie's olympic (club fred) plays host to:
Wheel of Fortune & Succulent,
Love Seats,
It'll Grow Back,
Blake Jones,
Roger Perry
local poet Chicago.
[and just added...Rademacher!]

starts @ 4, music goes on @ 4:30, show's over around 8.

cost? only $5. although, as a lover of cafe corazon, i'm likely to donate a little more.

prehistoric crappy hour

dear creative fresno,
you lied about several things for your prehistoric happy hour.
1. you advertised $3. margaritas were $5, beer was $4.
2. you said 21 & over and yet there were a ton of kids.

seriously, this sucks.

i'm in. not sure which venue yet, but i'm in rogue 2009. thursday, february 26 to saturday, march 7

foul ball grammar

i saw this sign, and it's one i've actually seen quite frequently, but it stood out to me this time. you see, the colon tells me that you're talking to the foul balls, letting them know that the institution won't be held responsible for their damage.

beautiful losers

as a part of this big metropolitan museum reopening, fresno filmworks has a 10 pm show on saturday of the movie beautiful losers. this is a movie i have been pretty interested to see, and now i get a chance to do it for free. it's a documentary, so if you're not into that, well, i got nothing for ya. but i'll be there.

Beautiful Losers
Saturday, November 15, 2008
10:00 p.m.
Fresno Metropolitan Museum
1555 Van Ness, Fresno
Admission is free

and the trailer:

Beautiful Losers film trailer from beautifullosersfilm on Vimeo.

and a little synopsis:

In the early 1990's a loose-knit group of likeminded outsiders found common ground at a little NYC storefront gallery. Rooted in the DIY (do-it-yourself) subcultures of skateboarding, surf, punk, hip hop & graffiti, they made art that reflected the lifestyles they led. Developing their craft with almost no influence from the "establishment" art world, this group, and the subcultures they sprang from, have now become a movement that has been transforming pop culture.

Starring a selection of artists who are considered leaders within this culture, BEAUTIFUL LOSERS focuses on the telling of personal stories. It speaks to themes of what happens when the outside becomes "in" as it explores the creative ethos connecting these artists and today's youth.

trail of two cities marathon

today was fresno's trail of two cities marathon. our friend kasey was running in it and so we wanted to get out on the course and cheer her on. she, along with thousands of others, snaked through fresno and clovis to end up at woodward park.

we wanted to see her around mile 19, and she gave us an approximate time that she'd be around there. unfortunately, we had to park around a mile away from the viewing area, and so as we walked we got lazy and decided to just hit the finish area.

it took us a bit to drive to woodward park, park and walk to near the finish line. we found a good spot to stand and waited for our friend to whiz on by. and not too long after, there she was. fortunately, while we were out there the weather was nice and sunny. there was a bit of wind that probably wasn't all that fun for the runners but it didn't bother us much.

all in all, it was cool seeing so many people out there running. and, it was cool to see our friend go by, cheer her on and talk to her after the race.

congrats kasey, and congrats to everyone that took part in the marathon. hopefully, next year's event will be bigger and better.

fresno street clean up

every year, the city of fresno offers a great program to homes where you can put out a bunch of junk in your street and they'll take it away. as apartment dwellers, we'd never gotten to take part in it. now, since we're homeowners we're taking part of it for the first time. when we got our house, there was a rickety old shed in the back that we wanted to take out, and since i knew this was coming up it became the plan. our trash day comes up this week, so a few friends came over to help knock out the shed.

here i am swing a sledgehammer. brian almost hit me later with that same sledge.

we took down one side, and then knocked the back wall in, which also started to bring down the roof

in this photo you can see that the roof is actually a metal garage door. i knew this, but what we discovered was that the whole shed was pretty much made up of garage doors. the top and back were whole doors, and the front and sides seemed to be part doors. crazy stuff.

here's the shed all knocked down and mostly cut up, and a lot hauled into the street. the front right is the roof/garage door waiting to get cut up. everything has got to be broken down into 4' sections, which wasn't too hard for the wood parts. unfortunately, we broke both of the metal cutting jigsaw blades so we didn't get the garage door done. it'll have to wait until i get a chance on tuesday.

here's the pile in the street after we were done. taking down the shed and breaking it mostly up only took us about 2 hours. now i've got to get some final clean up done out there, take out two junipers, and get it ready for the spanking new shed i'll put in.

and here's some bonus video of the crazy roaches that were dwelling in the old shed.

fun friday

check out some things i saw around fresno on friday.

incest & abuse are available at a discount. which is nice, who wants to pay full price for incest or abuse?

the view looks good from the sky room downtown. it's sad that it's a little obscured by bars, but i guess safety first.

another, more blurry pic from the sky room.

and finally, another spot downtown where they've got the urinal next to the sink, without any sort of divider. so, yes, you can wash your hands right next to me while i urinate. gross.
