That, unfortunately, is not just a Tennessee thing. It is, I think, a Southern thing. We have lots of that in Florida, too. Have you seen any of the houses that don't really have a foundation - they're literally up on cement blocks (like the ones you can buy at Home Depot)? They terrify me.

yard ape is still a term coach uses, and i usually wince. i know that he does not mean it in any sort of racial way, but it seems like one to me.
