"from where he comes from" in the South, dogfighting isn't that unusual."
"It's like cockfighting in Puerto Rico," x said. "There are certain things that are indicative to certain parts of the country."
wow. that's some of the dumbest crap i've ever heard. you know what also has deep history in the south, may not be that unusual, and is also where mike vick comes from: racism. is it indicative to the south? should we just accept that until the light bulb turns on inside a person's head?
look, i understand some people might want to defend mike vick because they feel that the media is piling on him. but, you know what, he's pleading guilty to violating federal laws. he's a high profile guy. in the most high profile sport in america. he just signed a contract for more money than he can ever spend. if you're going to defend him, try not to go with some dumb, "that's how we do," type defense. maybe talk about the nature of sentencing especially mixed with emotional cases, such as this one.
i mean, i'm not even totally against dog fighting. something about pitting two animals against each other is strangely intriguing. yet, i wouldn't endorse it, practice it, go to one, and so on. and, in a country where it is illegal, i refuse to just accept it as "this is where he's from." i do feel bad that everyone is acting like mike vick is hitler. let's put this in perspective: he was involved in killing some animals in a terrible fashion. yes, this particular species of animal is a beloved, domesticated animal. he will be punished for it. he didn't go and have his posse shoot up a strip club.
will this celeb be defending pacman jones' actions next? i mean, in the south it's cultural to go to the strip club and make it rain. and, if you roll with a posse, it's not completely uncommon for them to get to shootin.

Well she's off to a good start. Seriously, at this rate, they ought to try buy Meredith Vieira back from the Today show.
Aw crap I guessed Tom Cruise just out of spite.
Also I am outraged when any animal (humans included) are brutally killed, not just domesticated.
If you don't endorse it, practice it, or go to it, but you're not totally against it, how can you criticize people who defend it, however obscurely?
it's easy to criticize her defense, especially because it is such a weak defense. especially if you change dog fighting to racism, bum fights, gay bashing, and so on.
now, i'm not criticizing her for defending him. i'd be fine with any one voicing the support for vick. i may not agree with them, but they can still defend him.
as for me, i'm not justifying dog fighting. i am saying that i think people are piling on the guy, probably more than is deserved for his crime. in this way, i am defending vick, even though i'm not defending dog fighting.
I agree it's a pretty weak defense.
I can also understand piling onto the guy. In a day in age where most of our celebrities are progressive people using their status as a platform to push whatever agenda, it's shocking when one of them is shown to be so backwards by being involved in something as primitive as animal fighting.
All day long we hear about "donate to this cause" or "adopt kids in this African nation" or "fight AIDS" or "get involved in politics" and then suddenly someone from that caste jumps up and says "hey, I mistreat animals for sport" and I can totally see why everyone is jumping on this celebrity.
The argument itself is definitely weak. I just can't see how the physical pain of any animal (regardless of what part of the country you are from) can be acceptable in anyones eyes.
That is why people are coming down so hard on him, these are animals that are defenseless and they were raised to kill and be killed essentially. You have this physically intimidating guy making millions of dollars a year and yet he is still making money or attempting to make money on these dogs he was raising and killing them if they didnt perform. I think the contrast between Vick and the dogs (David and Goalith-esque) is what really pissess people off.
