mialuv ulongty & notown derby match review

we may have a new favorite roller girl over @ the view looks good from here, fresno. i mean, we didn't vote or anything, but we were both blown away by the skill of mialuv ulongty. not only was her name and number (10 dolla) hilarious, she had the skillz to pay the billz. really, she cut through the crowd without any difficulty. at times it looked like she was the only one moving in a pack, and then she was fifteen feet ahead.

overall, the notown derby girls looked very good. they played hard, and looked way more prepared than the opposition from chino. i was worried that notown might be in a little trouble because hari kari was out injured, but several ladies stepped up big as jammers. even lotta leadpipe took a turn at jammer and scored some points. and, the notown

couple of suggestions (because i got 'em):
-whorechata might want to throw a few less elbows. seriously, i love the passion, but i'm not sure i saw her make two laps around the track without getting tossed into the penalty box.
-stop arguing with the refs. and refs, stop listening to arguments. if you make a call, make it. if someone wants to argue, tell them to stfu. having watched sports all my life, i know that when refs entertain players "suggestions" it makes them look like they don't know what they're doing. i understand a little, but if after every other jam we (the crowd) has to sit and wait while the refs get spoken to, have a mini huddle, call people over, talk more, etc it sucks.
-the sound in the building is still really uneven. i was talking to a friend on the south side of the track during a break and the sound was rather intelligible. i was seated on the north side of the track and it was pretty garbled. it seemed like they made some improvements, but it could still get a little better.
-if you're ever looking for announcers, the view looks good from here, fresno would love to give it a try. it's possible we might suck, but hey, maybe no one hears it anyway.

again, great work by notown and everyone who helped put it together last night.

Awesome review!!! And I think you being an announcer is an awesome idea!

mike oz says she is in fact on loan from visalia.

This was a great review.
But I have to offer a few clarifications or rather, explainations.

Mia is a V-Town Derby dame. When a team doesnt have enough skilled players to fill the 13-girl roster, they bring in others from surrounding areas.
SCRG and NoTown helped Visalia get their team up and running and swap skaters quite often.
SCRG used Busty Chops from Vtown quite a bit.
They are some amazing women and great athletes.

Throwing elbows is typical for new skaters, which Whorchata is. "keep your elbows down" is one of the most often-heard statement at a practice!
She probably just doesnt have the fundamentals down yet. Give her time.

In the defense of the refs, Womens Flat Track Derby Assoc. rules literally change every year sometimes during the year. So while some refs are used to certain rules, they may not know every new rule out there.
Sucks but it's just one of the little flaws in rollerderby.
AND most of the refs are recruited and brought in mere weeks before a bout so they are barely learning the rules.

When a team is down players they are able to borrow from other teams. Notown, however, as a result of several injuries and due to the fact that the roster for the opposing team was informed of consisting of only 13 players was able to borrow players from V-town, who played an awesome game and contributed to making it spectacular. While borrowing can be as a result of not having significant amount of skill, I believe that the skill level of the team has drastically improved. Several girls played the game injured but were able to pull through so that rather than play with a 9-girl roster, they were able to play with a 13-girl roster that included the additional aid of v-town. Typically the roster consists of 14 girls.

sometimes i wonder if people read comments before commenting.

i found out that she was on loan, and posted that in the comments. it gets repeated twice after that.

joey goes into further detail and explains the load deal, very helpful.

and then anonymous comes with the same info.

i implore you, people, read comments before commenting. it may have already been said.

No need to implore. The review was read and understood quite clearly. Just wanted to clarify that the borrowing explained above(read thoroughly by this poster and yes this will be the third time it gets mentioned) was not due to lack of skill, but then that would've been understood, if as you stated, comments were read before commenting.

anonymous,
ah, i see where you're coming from on the skilled thing, but i think you're taking joey's comment a little out of context, or perhaps reading into it.

the fact is, notown was down a few players, and used the common loan practice.

let me throw out a sentence, and then i'll tell you how i understood it, "When a team doesnt have enough skilled players to fill the 13-girl roster, they bring in others from surrounding areas."

to me, this says that when you don't have enough match ready players you borrow. i'm guessing that notown practices with more than just the 13 women on the roster. so, that must mean that there are people that are a part of the team but they're not ready to be called up to matches. there were some notown players, like hari kari, that were injured and couldn't play at all. there were others dinged up but could play. due to all of these circumstances, notown reached to local friends and borrowed what was needed. no biggie.

no one's trying to say that notown derby couldn't cut it on their own talent.

i'm not trying to start any arguments, i'm just trying to make sure people aren't going after something that wasn't intended.

Thank you Ed for clarifying that. Somehow, whenever I talk derby, someone is waiting in the wings to find fault or argument with what I'm saying.
I skated for three years. I'm pretty sure I know what I'm talking about.

But I think you nailed it when you said "I think your are taking it out of context or reading into it."
I can't control how folks are going to view me or my words.
I just hope that with all I've said and done for roller derby in Fresno, the underlying feeling would be one of appreciation and understanding.
But, you can't please everyone I suppose. And it's always interesting when someone signs "Anonymous".

As for your interpretation of what I said, Spot on! It meant nothing more than what you just said!

Anonymous said...

Anonymous here lol. Didn't know leaving a name was a requirement? But then being relatively new to the internet scene, maybe my information is incorrect. As for waiting in the wings? I find I have better things to do than stalk your comments MsJoey, just happened upon this one. With having skated for well over 10 years the experience card also isn't necessary. No offense was taken with the lack of skill comment, although mood at the time could've contributed, just sought to clarify those readers that possibly aren't too familiar with the game. I felt it could've been worded differently. Of course coming to the game and observing, could have also served to validate that there was plenty of skill if there were some that did question whether or not it was present. Those that are passionate about skating always like to read comments about, well, anything that has to do with skating. I feel I fall into that category. There have been several excellent articles written, such as this one about mia, and I do enjoy reading them. Ed, I do thank you for the comment you posted above, and find that this probably should've been left alone (especially since I don't seem to be the only one waiting in the wings to comment). I believe I will just enjoy reading your articles and not bother with the comments =)

please feel free to keep commenting. it really does help.

as for having a name, it's not required. and even with a name it's not like there is a guarantee that anyone is who they say they are. but, i do think that having some sort of name/online identity does aid in conversation. you get the sense you're talking to the same person.

for instance, i'm either ed or edluv on this blog, fresno famous, the beehive, creative fresno, and any other local blog i'm commenting on. and, usually my comments are hyperlinked to my blog. people can "know" who i am and hopefully i', consistent. if i'm an ass here, or an ass on famous, or an ass on the beehive it gets around.

i'd say the same for joey. she's posted as joey or lola la chola @ all those same places, and so the local internets have a bit of knowledge of who she is. myself, i've met her a few times, but i'm sure we've interacted online much more. and, i understand where she's coming from on the waiting in the wings thing because i've seen her have to endure pot shots and sniping from anonymous people on sites like fresno famous.

all in all, i prefer if people who comment more than once, which i hope you will, either create a profile, or just sign their name.

Of course I always check back on my comments.
Is that a bad thing?
Thanks Ed for clarifying the "pot shot" situation.
Fortunately, it doesn't bother me enough to stop commenting.
If I affect someone that greatly, well, then, I've done my job!
