wasp anyone?

so, when mike wise came over to watch the u.s. suck it up with me, he informed me that there was a wasp's nest in our little peep hole knocker deal. he was right. i looked at it and it did not appear to currently have any wasps in it. so, i took a golf club that was in the entryway (i should put those away), opened the peep hole, and knocked it down. it feel on the ground and broke open. it was weird. appeared to be filled with dead little wasp babies, as well as little dead spiders. a bunch of both. bizarre. so, i cleaned up the mess and watched the game.

for the italy-ghana game, i went over to my mom's to watch with my brother. (he had the kids over there. our apt. isn't the most kid friendly.) so, when i came home, i saw a wasp fly out of the peeper. i looked in, and saw this:

so, i knocked the new one down. it was empty. but, before i was done, the wasp came back with more mud. he dropped it and flew off.

i waited a bit to try and get a photo, but he didn't came back. we'll see what happens next.

vegas, my story (now with pictures!)

here's the story. now, i'm not going to recount every little detail, just some stuff.

thursday - arrived, took a nap, played a little craps and pai gow. then the woody's showed up, with their friend russel. nice guy, we met @ woody's wedding. anyway, we hung out around the new frontier for a little, then went downtown for a bit (craps & slots), back to the n.front and played some blackjack.

friday - watched a little germany in the morning, and then went to the time share sales pitch. that is, after all, how we had 4 days & 3nights for free in vegas. want details how you can go for the same deal? anyway, after that we did something. and then we went back downtown, played some poker and some slots. i am unashamed, i love downtown vegas. then back to the new frontier for some more cards.

saturday - got up early and watched england. then went back to sleep for a while. then, went downtown to binions and played in a poker tourney. now, they have 4 of these a day, so it's not like it was some elite deal. but, there were over 70 in this tourney. i made it to the final tenth, finishing tenth. lowest payday spot. not huge money, but i won back my entry fee plus a little. heather and sara went to the wax museum, and shopping. so, heather was pretty tuckered out. she ended up staying in the rest of the evening. woody, sara, russel and i went to dinner @ il fornio (in n.y. n.y.) and then to a comedy show @ the riveria. it was free with our sales pitch. after that, we went to gilly's for a bit, then to harrah's outdoor deal. then back to new frontier. then hotel for sleep.

sunday - the woody's went home early this day, and we were flying out @ 8:30 p. so, i watched some soccer, heather and i played some penny slots. we went to some malls and to the airport.

and so went a fun, but tiring weekend. but, of course, i got up @ 5:45 to watch soccer. (the u.s. looked like crap this morning in the 2nd game. they better win the next 2.)

and now to the photo's

this is for jay. for some reason he always wants to see this show.

arty update

i've been putting in some hours on my painting (finally). things are coming along.

UPDATE: today, this one got a brushed over coat of thinner and some paint on the highlights. not exactly sure how this will turn out, but we'll see.

UPDATE: today, i evened out the darkness of the background, adding some lowlight colors in. also, added green into the tower lighting scheme.

this last one is hard to work on at some points. it reflects a lot of self doubt, and frustration. so, why would i want to dwell on it when i don't feel that way. well, i want to get it done. and sometimes i still feel it.

memorial day

i grew up in a "peace church." i attended university and seminary at institutions that are also affiliated with "peace church" traditions. none of these actually mean that i believe in peace or nonviolence. i do.

so, what do i think about a day that memorializes those lost in war? i'm all for it. i believe that we should honor those who have passed away. i believe that these individuals should not have had to sacrifice their lives in war, but i pay homage to these individuals, as creations of God. i respect their sarifice.

i don't appreciate memorial day when it is turned into a ra-ra, u.s. is best, support our troops at all costs event. i'm not saying that it has today, but then again, i wouldn't know. i haven't watched any news, gone to any parades, or done much for that matter.

so, what did i do? i watched braveheart. it was on cable. as someone who has distant family lines to scotland, i've always enjoyed this movie. (we grew up going to the local scottish games, i did caber toss and shot put as a kid in the competitions.) not too long ago, this movie became almost gospel among the Xian community. why? i'd like to thank, err blame, john eldridge. i like his writing, and in the book wild at heart, he celebrated the savage, the manly, the masculine. i realize that last sentence is an oversimplification. other authors, such as erwin mc manus from mosaic in l.a., have picked up on this theme, written about it, and implemented programs within the church, frequently employing the scottish warrior as a symbol. this bothers me. why? because this is not the way of Jesus. it is not the way of Jesus. i don't see Jesus as some little wimpy hippy guy, but neither was he a scottish warrior that would kill an enemy in his bed. nor was he a revolutionary, ala my favorite redux of che. yes, what he taught and embodied was revolutionary. but it was never violent, and will never be violent.

love your enemies. pray for those that persecute you. forgive without limits.

today, as we remember those who have died in war, i pray for our current soldiers. i pray for our leaders. i pray for God's will to be done in this world and for leaders who will work for this on local, national and global levels even if it hurts their pocketbooks. i pray for the return of the Prince of Peace.

return to life - brief update

xmen3 pulled in 107 mill this weekend. we saw it. very enjoyable. better than the second, and maybe even the first. that's rare, a sequel being as good, if not better.

our school and tons of volunteers put on a successful national track meet. our kids didn't do quite as well as hoped, but it's nationals. at least they made it, most never will complete @ that level.

i'm glad barry bonds moved ahead of babe ruth. i'm also glad dallas won games 2 and 3 in the western conference finals.

i need to paint a little more, and then i'll post an update on that.

world cup, and the arrival of the stewart5 on u.s. soil are both on a few days away. i'm excited. this also means that vega$ is also around the corner.

meh - random thoughts

this week is the naia championships for track and field. it's @ our track this year and next year. so, we've been super busy getting everything ready. the whole school is abuzz. some people just don't get it, but that's alright. so, i've been working pretty hard. it's pretty cool, i'm the head of weights and measures. all throwing implements come to me. so, all you fools that i heard talking crap about our facility, or were just rude while we worked out there, i hope you didn't want your stuff to get certified. just kidding.

i was watching a little of the giants game tonight. i'm a giants fan, and i realize that all things point towards bonds using 'roids @ some point. frankly, this doesn't bother me that much. not just because it's bonds and he's meant a lot to the franchise. honestly, i think baseball is sooo screwed no matter what. watered down leagues and pitching, poor ownderships, and it goes on. anyway, i was watching the game. bonds looks terrible right now, gimping about the outfield. a pretty easy ball was hit to left, over bonds' head. now, he ran to the ball, and made a decent enough throw in. but, a healthy player could have easily gotten to the the ball and made the catch.

been playing some online poker lately, play money. i'm not going the real money route. on pokerroom.com i'm edluv hmr, on full tilt i'm just edluv. woody and sara are both on full tilt. so, if you sign up, we could get a real big game of friends. how lame is that? playing online with each other instead of in person. but, i guess with so many being in different locales...

nice, interesting, different weekend.

heather went out of town on friday for a conference @ ucla. she came back sunday evening. so, i was on my own. well, brian was in town from the coast, and crashed on the couch friday night. we went to veni's, tokyo (sang a few songs) and then to meatball magic. didn't dance any, but i really like the music on those nights. definately going to have to go again.

saturday, went down to casa de woody in bakos. bbq, met some of their friends, and played a little cards. didn't play that well, chased too many bad hands. stupid. still had a decent time though.

today, two friends got baptized, and after we went out to a local restaurant, the service was crappy, and the waiter told me that they didn't serve a particular drink that i've had there several times. stoopid. in his defense, that particular drink was seasonal, and it's not currently in stock. but, he tried to tell me that he's worked there a year, and they've never ever had it. now, i know that i had not only this year's, but also last year's batch.

another interesting thing this weekend, i ran into two old friends. friday, as we were leaving veni's, i ran into big dave. small talk, exchange numbers, check you later. tonight, we tried to get a table, but none were avail. @ one place, so we were heading out to another place (where we got crap for service). but, i ran into my buddy theo, who i haven't seen since midway through college. small talk, trade numbers and so on. i really hope to catch up with both of these two at laters times.

yet another interesting thing, the dr. on the stupid carl's jr commercial for "naturally bigger chicken breast sandwiches" is a real plastic surgeon. i saw him on some program. cable's full of good stuff.

finally, tonight i watched a program about the '06 north american international auto show. lots of cool cars. best of show went to this one:

this is the concept for the new camaro. sick throwback to the early camaro models. i think i'm in lust.

interesting day

here's our new cable box:

here's what's currently showing on the box:

wha? i've had cable an hour and it's already out. so, i call comcast. talk to customer service. no outages. everythings plugged in correctly. so, they try a few things on their end. no luck. still no cable. we'll have to send someone out. how does tomorrow afternoon sound. terrible. i've had cable for an hour, and you're telling me that you can't fix it until 24 hours from now. i think we've started a short and unhappy relationship. oh, and thanks for screwing up the order. i ordered cable in 2 rooms, @ a certain rate. the installer comes, nope, i've got you @ this rate and one room. well, the rate turns out to be a slightly better deal, so i'll go with that. and you won't install interior wiring, so i can't have the other room. fine. i think after my 3 month deal is done, so may go cable.

but, i noticed outside that the property management has been around. they fixed @ leak on my neighbor's swamp cooler. that's good, it was probably going to eventually cause the collapse of their building, if it hasn't already done the damage.

and, interestingly, they installed this:

ch ch ch ch changes

so, it seems like we make plans, and then they change. it happens.

like, although the june vegas plans were made plenty in the distance, most have had to back out. understandable.

last friday, i scheduled installation of diret tv. this was done after much consideration of plans, competive options and offers by other companies, and looking into the rules for installation @ our duplex. as renters, we just can't do whatever we want, there is a page and a half of rules for how satellite can be installed @ our place. basically, the main rule is that it can't be attached to the house or roof. as i looked @ our place, i found a loop-hole: the antenna already on the roof. we've got a standard, broadcast tv antenna that's mounted on about a 2" thick pole.

today, the loophole closed. installers came, looked @ my solution, and said no, it wouldn't do. not sturdy enough. damn. damn. cancel that direct tv. damn. that means no dream of nfl sunday ticket anymore.

but, ah, new plans. cable is on the way. installation between 10-12 on thursday. in the long run, it'll cost us a little more than satellite would have. but it'll be good. and, more importantly, we will have access for all of the world cup.

art update may 11

this lovely little one is in a pretty early stage. well, there are layers underneath, but it's far from where i see it being finished. it's going to be another piece based off of trying to capture the essence of the tower district.

this is a painting that i've been reworking. it used to look like this:

finale season

ah yea boy.

down to the last episode on the amazing race. three teams left. and, heather, mike and i have picked well. going into the finale, the hippies, picked by heather, are leading. in second are the frat boys, picked by mike. and, trailing by just a few minutes are ray and yolanda, my pick.

thursday night is the second to last episode of survivor. sunday is the finale. peeps are welcome to join us on either night to watch. in an odd twist, i don't think i know anyone that made a definate pick before this season started. but i'm pulling for terry right now.

a suggestion for adam and others that might be interested. ps3 is going to cost $500 & $600, and be available nov. 17. i've already got a little nest egg stashed away for mine.

you mean other people think it's inconsistent, too?

nice crack back.

i just want to help you

as many of you know, i recently graduated from seminary. i hope to eventually teach biblical studies @ university level.

in the meantime, i thought i'd share this nothing with all of you, especially those who need a little help in the Bible department.

UPDATE: i took out the link. although it was only as crass as you can be with legos, i thought maybe it wasn't something i wanted to leave up linked.

what's next for me

as i look for work, here are a few books i'll be reading. some are ones that i've already read, others i've started, some have never had the spine cracked.

bonus question: do you know what this photo is an homage to?

return of the househusband

so, today is the second week day of being done with seminary. yesterday, i had track practice and tim was still in town. but today, all alone @ home, and i'm not going to track (no practice today not just my laziness). sara called me this morning. she was in town for work, had some free time, wanted to know if i wanted to grab some breakfast. now, i was sleeping at the time, but went. hey, i'm not just a lazy punk, i had to get up @ 4:30 to take tim to the airport. it was difficult to get back to sleep after that. hey, i'm fine anyway that it was 9:30 on a weekday and i was sleeping. but i got up and went to eat. good time, chatting and eating @ the chicken pie shop.

after watching the second half of the price is right, i decided my day would be better served by tidying up. well, yesterday i did the dishes, but whatever.

first, i took the Xmas lights down from the windows in the front. this was done so that they could be opened. then, i cleaned the window seals and some other details in the living room.

then, i went to our bathroom. unfortunately, heather cleaned this room the other day. well, that was good, but the back thing is that we have a swamp cooler. the first time or two of the season that you turn it on, it blows out a big gust of dust that has accummulated in it. it has gotten warm enough over these last few days that we'll need to use the cooler soon (in fact i've got it on as i type).

sunday, heather tried to run the cooler to no avail. she told me it just made this "rrrrrrrrrrr" sound but didn't blow. i opened the front, turned it on, and yes, "rrrrrrrrrrr". i figured that the turn wheel deal was just stuck in place, and the best thing to do would be to turn it by hand and thus free it. so, i turned it off, and then went about moving the big wheel. yep, stuck, and yep, it moved soon. but, it moved and tried to snatch my finger off. yow!

now, this picture doesn't do it justice. i was too lazy to go and get the camera right away, but you might have better seen this white gash on my middle finger. it was deep enough that i kept looking at it and thinking, "is this going to bleed?" nope, it didn't.

so, after freeing the wheel, i turned on the pump to thruroughly soak the pads. that should cut down the amount of dust blown by now freed wheel. i let the pump run on its own for maybe an hour, the pads were nicely wet, and you could feel the humidity around the swamp cooler. while waiting, i had taken all the stuff out of the bathroom that i didn't want to get dusty (toothbrushes, towels, etc) and put most everything else in cabinets. turned on cooler (with doors into adjacent rooms shut), small dust cloud, turn off cooler, wait second turn back on, no dust cloud. sweet. turn off cooler.

then, i brought in the vacuum to get up all the dust on the ground, countertops, and little nooks and crannies. it's all clean and running now.

he's just a fast food knight

so, last night we were discussing the fact that iron & wine's version of "such great heights" was on the garden state soundtrack. to which, i pointed out that the postal service version was in the movie. but, we weren't sure where. today, being the finished with seminary and nothing to do today person that i am, i said i'd watch the movie and find out.

i was wrong. they play the iron and wine version. when they're in the tub.

by the way, it says balls on your face.

dear south african homies

dear friends and family in south africa,
snoop dogg will be a little late arriving. Here's why.

friday night

here's how my friday night looks:

we'll start out w/a bbq out @ school for graduates. tim will be joining heather and i. after that, we're looking to head over to fagans for a night of great tunes. your friend and mine julia dawn is playing. the main act is a group you have got to see. el olio wolof. amazing sound, great lyrics. they're probably even on myspace. i know brian will meet us there. it's open invite, and the show is only like $5.

also, my fresno homies, there'll be a bbq on saturday @ my place. we may or may not go to the fuego game after. despite being the fresno fuego, it looks like this week's game will be played in visalia. but, there's still a chance of fresno, and me going.

done

after far too much procrastination, i had to pull an all nighter to finish writing my final paper for seminary. well, i hope that all assignments in yeild passing grades and it was my final paper of seminary.

in my defense, i did lose a bit of time this weekend due to no fault of my own. my intention to work on the paper while in the hotel for conference championships of track just didn't pan out. times i thought i'd have quickly evaporated. i didn't even really have the chance to waste them, they disappeared on their own.

but, i'll soon post a new video documenting how our bus got stuck.

as easy as riding a bike v.3

so for the third day in a row i went to ride to work and school.

today's mishap: about 1/3 mile away from home (on my way), the bolt that holds my bike seat on broke in half. i was riding along, heard this creaking noices, felt the selt moving under my rear, and then stood up on the pedals. seat, and various little parts fell to the ground. so, i picked up my seat and pieces, and pedaled home while standing.

it's the bus for me until i can get rid of the gremlins tinkering with my bike.

do i feel vindicated? as adam says, "hells yeah."

justin called it karma.

i went to pick up some lunch today, and while waiting for it to arrive i perused the newspaper. a grin spread across my face when i read this story.

now, i realize that i shouldn't gloat, or be happy about someone else's failure, but here it is anyway. boo ya! how do you like them apples?

here's the backstory for those that want it.
for years in fresno, echo was known for it's gourmet cuisine. it was one of the premier restaurants in town, especially in my neighborhood. (echo is a street running through the tower). apparently, all good things come to an end, and they decided to the far end of town. they bypassed the main, glitzy area (riverpark) and took up @ an even farther north location.

this is all fine with me, and with many people in the area. sure, it theoretically has a negative financial impact on my area. but, restaurants come and go, and the tower is not at a loss for fine dining.

what really angered many in the area, including myself, was what the owners of e.coli said after they announced their move. they said, in the freekin paper, that the tower didn't draw enough high end customers anymore. that the there was too much crime in the area. people were afraid.

hmmm, how'd that north end clientele work out for ya?

oh, and rousseau, the high end restaurant that was located directly across the street, is going strong. they've recently finished their third expansion, and now have a full bar. 609 grille, your next door neighbor is doing well. well enough that the owners opened another restaurant down the street in the tower (ok, 609 is probably going to close, but the owners say its because they really want to focus all their efforts in the new place).

they only thing that i regret is that now, since you're located so far north, i won't be able to walk over and buy one or more of the frank lloyd wright chairs that you're selling as you liquidate.

updatey-do

wow, just emailed off some pretty large papers. one was just a final, corrected version of my senior paper that's been done for over a month.

the other was a research paper that was due last night at midnight. so, it's 2% marked down from the start. the good thing is that i'm taking the class credit/no credit and only need to get above a 70% in the course. based on previous assignments turned in, i think i only needed to get about 30% of the points available on this assignment. so, i think that's mission accomplished.

now, i just have to turn in a one page reading summary, and a twelve page paper. that twelve page one is going to be a bit of work yet. but after that, i'm done with seminary. (assuming i pass the class w/the 12 page paper due).

oh yeah, happy birthday to becky.

as easy as riding a bike v.2

today was another good day for riding, and i took full advantage of it. i had to go to track, and it was a nice break from paper writing. good to be out in the sun, enjoying the ride, getting some exercise.

practice went alright. this week is short practices for the athletes, as the conference championships is this weekend and we want them to be rested.

the ride home was going great. for those that don't know, i travel down butler to o street, then hit some differing little cross streets until i had divisidaro. i take that to van ness, to olive, to maroa, floradora & i'm home. easy travel, usually pretty light traffic.

so, i was turning off van ness onto olive. i was starting from a red light, and there was a guy in the cross walk so i waited for him to go, and then went behind him. i'd probably gone maybe ten feet up the street and crash. ed smacks pavement. now, i'm still trying to figure out what exactly happened. i know i caught the leg of my shorts on something. was i standing up, and caught part of the handle bar? i don't know. something happened, and the next thing i know i'm bouncing off the street, trying to get up before i get run over by the cars now turning behind me. i did that, jumped back on the bike, and pedaled away. today's crash resulted in quite a few more scrapes. both forearms got scraped, my left leg and knee, and my right thigh got banged up on the cross bar.

two days in a row i managed to do something that i had avoided in the previous 6 months of cycling. this makes me wonder what will happen tomorrow. maybe i'll take the bus.

as easy as riding a bike

today was beautiful. the sun was shining, the sky was clear. it was nice and dry out, so i was happy to be able to ride my bike to school and work. i hadn't ridden in over a week due to bad weather and heather being off work (i could get a ride or take the car). it was windy, but that was only going to bother me on the ride home. it was tail wind on the way there.

it really felt great to ride. i was cruising along at a good speed, but caught two red lights in a row. not that bad, but it always stinks when you're enjoying the ride and have to wait at a stop light. and, these two lights are maybe 100m apart. at the second, i was slowly approaching, and kicked my left foot out of the clip. then, for no apparent reason, i fell over on my right side. i was completely stopped, about to put my left foot on the ground, and fell over.

fortunately, there was only one car around. the lady was nice, didn't laugh at me, but asked if i was alright. i was, and told her so, while laughing myself. i scraped my leg a little, no biggie. although, i was pretty lucky that i didn't fall and smash my laptop, which was in my backpack.

they finally have done it.

my favorite team moved away from big bad nike.

i'm the elton john of hats

my friend shlomi said that about me when i was displaying my recent hat purchases. i'm still not exactly sure what it means, but it makes me laugh.

so, i thought i'd show off my fedora.

i bought this hat when i was fifteen or sixteen. we were on a mexico missions trip, and stopped to buy hats. most people got normal sun hats. i bought a fedora. it was like $5 or $10. at the time, i thought it was a good blues man hat. hell, i still do. the thing is, i'm not a blues man. but, i still have one fancy hat.

conclusive evidence that Jesus was white

so, i was flipping through the channels and ran across this movie. it solved a question that had been in my mind for a long time. "what color was Jesus?" this video shows definitive proof that Jesus was white.

now, he spoke spanish in the film. it wasn't dubbed in, but was recorded in spanish. this may create a new question foor me. what language did Jesus speak?

i also took some still photos, and they're uploaded onto my flickr site.

not fully scanned

the amazing race is down to the final five teams. pretty good episode tonight. lake and his wife were eliminated. thankfully. and, the team i have been pulling for moved up from last to third. they would have been second, but received a 15 min penalty. the frat boy team that mike is rooting for is still in first. the hippies, who heather is pulling for, are now in last. they made some pretty big errors on this episode, and are pretty lucky to still be in it. the drove the wrong way for an hour, so they were about 2 hours behind most of the teams. but, team dental work managed to get lost after the final challenge, and arrived later.

lost was a pretty good episode tonight.

guess what was back tonight...BEES! the news tonight had a story about two neighborhoods with big swarms of bees. they weren't the top story (possible flooding was). the fire department was called out to two different areas. one was about a mile from our place. so, the warm weather is to blame. really, bees are around in spring? potholes were another big story. all the rain, plus already poor road conditions bring on the potholes.

this story confirms something i've always thought. some people make bad decisions, and then keep on making them.

what to do?

hmmm, i think i've got to rename this blog. i'm about to send out some resumes. now, i don't have any problem with the content here. but, prospective employers may. so, i may go a little more anonymous here.

art hop today

here's some photos taken tonight while heather, adam and i went about for arthop.

check out the grass on the roof of this house by club jinnaka. there are also a bunch of no loitering, no trespassing signs on it.

although you can't see them, these are two pictures of bees. this was a "major" story on tonight's news. bees, a swarm, creating a problem. so, after we went and saw art, we went and saw bees.

we were close to wendy's and i thought, "i'd like a frosty." so, adam and i enjoyed frosties. see them in the bottom right corner?

here's the frosty in my hand. and the honda logo of our civic hybrid.

are their any rats left on the ship or have they all jumped

so, they keep biting the hand that fed them for soooo long. now, i don't blame them for testifying to what transpired, but it still surprises me that they won't take one for the team and do a little time. instead, libby told investigators that the president knew, no wait, authorized the leak of sensitive intelligence information about Iraq.

now, there isn't proof, yet, that bush also authorized the leaking of Valerie Plame's identity as a cia operative.

mcc presale

oooh, goody, the mcc sale (which is this weekend) has opened up their bookstore for the yearly presale. picked up $19.50 in books and lp's. it's a good start, but they keep bringing out more. i'll have to check back later in the week.

i also just bought my first album from the itunes music store. now, i've been using itunes for quite some time, but never purchased any music from them. just rip'd my own previously purchased music. today, i entered the world of buying music online. good for me. way to step into a few years ago. the album you ask? well, it's none other than...

for those that can't tell, that's morrissey's ringleader of the tormentors. it was released today. maybe i'll do a full review. i think that would be the first cd i've reviewed here. but the first two songs of the album, very nice.

and, hey, i'm digging itunes music store. there are a bunch of things i've been wanting to get but could never find @ local music stores (bruce springstein's nebraska as an example). so, i'll have to really work hard to control my music purchases. i used to buy a lot of music. then, i got married, couldn't just spend $ on whatever stupid thing i felt like, and my music supply got sorta cut off. over the last 5.5 years i've bought music, and am able to do so without feeling like i'm wasting money, or pulling it away from something essential. but still, itunes makes it way to easy to buy stuff.
