kudos to channel 30 for doing a story on a warehouse party that was busted up by the cops. it's a pretty crazy story that involves around 2000 kids, shots fired, a warehouse that's probably one step away from being a death trap, and an $8 cover. click over and watch their video (hey channel 30, move into this century and let people embed your videos) and come back here and share your thoughts.
in college i went to a few warehouse parties and even helped to promote them a bit. they can be pretty fun ways to get people out on the dance floor and have a good time. we never did anything this big, but i'm sure we weren't too far away from being in a precarious situation with too many people in an inadequate facility for what we were doing. then again, night clubs routinely have bands play in packed facilities. sure, they may have hired security and are licensed, but ill ish can happen anywhere, and accidents happen.

cops & taggers
what is art? i ask that question in my sociology class, with the follow up question of is graffiti art? it's interesting to hear the responses.
today, two stories popped into my view, both about tagging. now, in both cases taggers were involved w/law enforcement. but, it seems that there were subtle differences in how the situations were handled.
in l.a., a tagger working under the nom de plume buket has wracked up over $150,000 in damages to walls, buses, signs, etc all over so.cal and southern nevada. dude was prolific and he did it in a little different fashion. you see, he was doing a lot of it in the daylight, just right out in the open. and, it was getting posted on youtube. not sure exactly how much youtube played into him getting caught, but he was, and he's up on felony vandalism charges.
in philly, well cops there just can't seem to catch a break. perhaps they could start by not assaulting any more suspects. two cops there saw a man graffiti'ing and beat him up. broke his jaw on one side. kicked him in the groin. put him in the hospital for a few days. but, didn't arrest him, and then falsified records of where they were @ the time of the assault. nice work, philly pd, keep it up. a few more "unrelated incidents" and you'll have days of rioting to face (e.g. cincinnati).

cops writing cops
the other day, adam was wondering about cops and the relationship of religion and people assuming guilt. a lot of his thoughts hinge on the idea that cops can be abusive, power hungry jerks. well, i'm putting some words into his mouth on that, but i think that's a fair generalization of some of his feelings.
today, i was pointed to this website. it is almost a catalog of entitlement, written for police officers by police officers. what's the website about? well, it's a place for police to rant about...other police. you see, many police think that they should be above the law. they should be allowed to speed (or break other laws), and then pull the old, "do you know who i am?" routine. apparently, police should turn a blind eye to the lawlessness of fellow police officers.
and, they even have a "richard" of the month section. if a cop is acting like a cop while doing his sworn duty, feel free to nominate him.
some of the best letters deal with how these cops feel that their entitlement should be extended to everyone they know. or at least to their children, brothers, sisters, etc. as they complain about how these family members weren't let off for being related to a law enforcement officer. i wish i'd have known about this privilege before, it could have saved me some time and $, being the son of a retired sheriff.
sheesh. things like this don't inspire a lot of confidence in the "leaders" of society.

party police
so, i found a new, interesting program. there wasn't much on, so we were flipping through the channels and something caught my eye: a little show called party police. this particular episode was Wild on the Water 2. they were @ biscayne bay on columbus day.
now, i don't really like the show cops. and basically, this was very similar. yet, it was strangely enjoyable. i don't know why it's interesting for me to watch drunks, in boats, get bothered by the cops.
