christian boobs

i wanted to share with you a great blog post from the blog jesus needs new pr. it's about how people dress. or, rather, how people should dress, specifically women, if they want to be modest, Xian women.

in short, he points out:
inherent sexism in modesty discussions
inconsistent standards
modesty is a culturally determined standard
the shame attached to modesty talks

i don't always check out that blog, but i drop by every so often and scroll down to see hilariously bad church signs, weird Xian videos, and more. i hope you enjoy the read.

Thanks, it was a good read. I'd be interested to see what he thinks about the subject when it's not couched in religion. That aspect of the story doesn't really seem applicable, like there could be a secular standard or discussion about modesty that is openly inclusive. Especially since he talks about the disagreements between denominations. If it can't be reconciled in that way, why try to reconcile it all within the sphere of religion?

i agree that there could be an interesting, secular discussion of modesty. but, i also understand where the author is coming from - he's writing from a Xian perspective, even if he does like to poke fun @ Xians with his blog. i also think his post is interesting because of his openness about his uncomfortableness talking about the issue at all. he sees the need, knows where he is coming from, but isn't sure exactly how to touch on the issue w/o falling into the old stereotypes.

That's the catch-22 of simultaneously holding membership in a historically paternalistic system and being a man. To bring the system down, from the inside, while holding an intrinsic position of privilege is (obviously) very difficult, especially in the face of religion's inevitable moralizing on things like modesty. So from my perspective, the only way to end the issues he broaches would be a full stop on judgment.
